How much caffeine is in coffee, tea & energy drinks?

  2. How much caffeine is in coffee, tea & energy drinks?
<p>Around 90% of adults on the planet <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Frequency-of-consumption-of-caffeine-containing-traditional-food-and-drinks_tbl3_348763087" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">drink caffeine daily</a>. Most don’t know how much they’re getting. That’s because the caffeine content in popular coffee, tea, and energy drinks ranges from near zero to more than 300 mg per serving.&nbsp;</p><p>The type of drink, the plant it comes from, and how it’s brewed all change the amount of caffeine in your cup. Lots of folks are running on a lot more caffeine than they think, and when it comes to caffeine, <a href="https://science.drinklmnt.com/did-you-know/caffeine-timing-dosing-cycling" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">more isn’t better</a>.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>How Much Caffeine Is Right for You?</h2><p>Caffeine can tune up your <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0149763416300690" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">alertness, attention, reaction time, and motivation</a>. And when you get the right amount at the right time, you get those benefits without jitters or anxiety.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>The ideal dose is personal.</strong> It depends on your <a href="https://science.drinklmnt.com/did-you-know/why-caffeine-tolerance-is-individual" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">individual genetics and tolerance</a>. After <a href="https://science.drinklmnt.com/did-you-know/robb-wolf-work-naval-special-warfare" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">five years training some of the most elite fighters on the planet</a>, former research biochemist, bestselling author of “Wired to Eat,” and LMNT co-founder Robb Wolf observed that 50 mg caffeine per serving delivers the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0149763416300690" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">mental benefits of caffeine without the downsides</a>.</p><p>When you don’t know how much caffeine is in your drinks, it’s all too easy to overshoot the 50 mg-per-serving sweet spot. You can blow right past the <a href="https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/spilling-beans-how-much-caffeine-too-much" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">400 mg limit</a>, which is the upper limit for daily caffeine consumption, with just a couple of servings (or one supersized serving) of energy or coffee chain drinks. And since most folks tend to be more caffeine sensitive than not, plenty of people get hit with caffeine’s downsides at a much lower amount than 400 mg a day.</p><p>Knowing your personal limits and how much caffeine is in your go-to drinks can help you plan a daily caffeine strategy to get the <a href="https://science.drinklmnt.com/did-you-know/how-caffeine-influences-mental-performance" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">mental performance</a> benefits you want without the jitters and insomnia you don’t.</p><h2>How Much Caffeine Is in Tea?</h2><p>Caffeine in tea ranges from about <a href="https://digital.csic.es/bitstream/10261/171370/4/Healteas.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">15 mg in an 8 oz cup of white tea</a> to <a href="https://www.caffeineinformer.com/caffeine-content/matcha-green-tea" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">65 mg for an 8 oz matcha</a>.</p><p>The usual dose of caffeine per 8 oz of tea is:</p><ul><li><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/caffeine/art-20049372" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Black tea</a> —<a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11785678/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> ~40</a>–<a href="https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/spilling-beans-how-much-caffeine-too-much" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">70 mg</a></li><li><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/caffeine/art-20049372" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Green tea</a> — <a href="https://www.cspi.org/caffeine-chart" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">~25–50 mg</a></li><li><a href="https://www.caffeineinformer.com/caffeine-content/white-tea" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">White tea</a> — <a href="https://digital.csic.es/bitstream/10261/171370/4/Healteas.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">~15–30 mg</a></li><li><a href="https://www.caffeineinformer.com/caffeine-content/oolong-tea" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Oolong tea </a>— <a href="https://www.cspi.org/caffeine-chart" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">~40–55 mg</a></li><li><a href="https://www.caffeineinformer.com/caffeine-content/matcha-green-tea" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Matcha — ~65 mg</a></li><li><a href="https://cris.msu.edu/news/ingredient-safety/herbal-tea/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Herbal — 0 mg</a></li></ul><p>The caffeine in tea is balanced by other natural compounds that support alertness without giving you jitters:</p><ul><li><a href="https://academic.oup.com/nutritionreviews/article/83/10/1873/8123998" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">L-theanine</a>: <a href="https://academic.oup.com/nutritionreviews/article/83/10/1873/8123998" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Boosts mental benefits</a> of caffeine while calming anxiety</li><li>Polyphenols: May help <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6356332/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">prevent cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and neurological disease</a>, keeping you sharp in the long run</li></ul><p>That’s one reason LMNT makes Lemonade Iced Tea with 50 mg of naturally occurring caffeine from organic black tea sourced in Kenya.&nbsp;</p><h3>Factors that affect caffeine content in tea</h3><p>There are many variables that go into a cup of tea, and most of them change the caffeine content of what’s in your mug.</p><ul><li><strong>Processing impacts caffeine content. </strong>Black, green, oolong, white … all true tea (<a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11521711/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">herbal teas aren’t technically teas at all, but tisanes</a>) comes from the same plant. It’s how the tea is processed once it’s picked that decides what type of tea it becomes.&nbsp;</li><li><strong>Different varieties of tea plants have different amounts</strong>. In addition to these processing differences, there are <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2304-8158/14/18/3268" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">multiple strains of tea plants</a> that each have varying amounts of caffeine.&nbsp;</li><li><strong>Place of origin plays a role in caffeine content.</strong> <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/0308814682900772?via%3Dihub" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Where the plant is grown and when it’s harvested</a> can also affect things. In other words, one strain of black tea grown on a tea estate in India may have more or less caffeine than the same strain grown in a Japanese tea garden.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li><strong>How you brew your tea matters</strong>. <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2304-8158/14/13/2313" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hotter water and longer steep times</a> jack up caffeine levels, meaning even tea leaves from the same tin in your kitchen can lead to a different experience.&nbsp;</li></ul><p>Research is mixed on whether tea bags or loose leaf tea yield more caffeine. <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0308814699002629?via%3Dihub" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The tea bag itself can slow infusion</a>, leading to lower caffeine content. But loose leaf tea made from <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0308814604008180?via%3Dihub" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">bigger pieces of the tea plant</a> also has slower infusion and lower caffeine levels.</p><p>You don’t have to test your brew in a lab for the exact milligrams of caffeine in any specific mug. Knowing the range for what you usually drink is the first step to dialing in a dose that works for you.</p><h3><strong>How Much Caffeine Is in Coffee?</strong></h3><p>Caffeine in coffee ranges from about <a href="https://www.caffeineinformer.com/the-caffeine-database" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">60 mg in an 8 oz cup of instant coffee</a> to roughly <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/menu/product/480/hot/nutrition" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">195 mg in an 8 oz cup of Starbucks Pike Place Roast</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>The usual dose of caffeine per cup of coffee is:</p><ul><li><a href="https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/spilling-beans-how-much-caffeine-too-much" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Decaf coffee (8 oz) — ~2–15 mg&nbsp;</a></li><li><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/caffeine/art-20049372" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Instant coffee (8 oz)</a> — <a href="https://www.caffeineinformer.com/the-caffeine-database" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">~60–100 mg</a></li><li><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0278691515001039" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Brewed coffee (8 oz) — ~96–195 mg</a></li><li><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/caffeine/art-20049372" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Espresso (1 oz shot) — ~63 mg</a></li><li><a href="https://www.cspi.org/caffeine-chart" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Cold brew (12 oz) — ~170–255 mg&nbsp;</a></li><li><a href="https://www.cspi.org/caffeine-chart" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Bottled/canned iced coffee — Highly variable; check the label</a></li><li><a href="https://www.starbucks.com/menu/product/480/hot/nutrition" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Starbucks Pike Place Roast (8 oz) — ~155 mg</a><a href="https://www.cspi.org/caffeine-chart" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">–</a><a href="https://www.starbucks.com/menu/product/480/hot/nutrition" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">195 mg</a></li><li><a href="https://www.dutchbros.com/website/menu/nutritional-guide.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Dutch Bros Americano (12 oz) — ~96 mg</a></li></ul><h3>Factors that affect caffeine content in coffee</h3><p>The caffeine content in coffee also depends on several things that can make the exact caffeine quantity in any one cup hard to pin down.</p><ul><li><strong>Where coffee beans are grown</strong> can mean <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-025-16126-x" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">more or less caffeine</a>.&nbsp;</li><li><strong>How they’re processed also has a big effect.</strong> The more the <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2304-8158/10/6/1208" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">beans are ground</a>, the more caffeine in your cup. In contrast, <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1155/jfq/2405668" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">the darker the roast, the less caffeine the beans cough up. In spite of what you may have heard or assumed about dark roast, the roasting breaks down caffeine and makes it harder to extract from the grounds.&nbsp;</a></li><li><strong>Brewing methods can change the caffeine level</strong>. <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2076-3417/14/23/11395" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Espresso</a> and <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-18247-4" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">cold brew</a>, for example, lead to higher caffeine concentrations. But generally, it’s hard to know how different brewing methods affect the exact amount of caffeine in your cup. Brewing methods can lead to a <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2076-3417/14/23/11395" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">wide and overlapping range of levels</a>, depending on factors like water temperature, brew time, and ratio of coffee to water.</li></ul><p>Just like with tea, you don’t have to know the exact caffeine content of your drinks down to the milligram, but it can be eye-opening to look at the ranges.&nbsp;</p><h3><strong>How Much Caffeine Is in Energy Drinks?</strong></h3><p>Energy drinks range from about <a href="https://www.redbull.com/us-en/energydrink/products/red-bull-energy-drink" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">80 mg in an 8.4oz can of Red Bull Original</a> to <a href="https://reignbodyfuel.com/en-us/products/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">300 mg in a 16oz can of Reign</a>.</p><p>Even more than when folks reach for a cup of coffee, folks who reach for an energy drink are looking for that caffeine boost. There’s such a wide range of caffeine content here that it would be easy to accidentally overshoot your caffeine with a single beverage, depending on your individual caffeine tolerance.&nbsp;</p><h3><strong>What Does This Mean for Your Daily Intake?</strong></h3><p>There’s no magic formula for how much caffeine to drink. Experiment with drinks that have different amounts of caffeine to find the <a href="https://science.drinklmnt.com/did-you-know/caffeine-timing-dosing-cycling" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">dose and timing</a> that delivers maximum benefits with minimum side effects for you.&nbsp;</p><p>For lots of folks, this is around 50 mg per serving. As you add an additional 50 mg dose or move your caffeine intake to a later time, notice how the change makes you feel. Are you struggling to fall asleep? Waking up less than refreshed? Notice when caffeine starts making you feel jittery. Any of these signs suggests a personal cutoff point in terms of timing or dose for you.&nbsp;</p><p>Getting your personal strategy right empowers you to use caffeine as a tool. Knowing how much you’re already getting on a typical day is the first step.&nbsp;</p>
